Building Alberta’s First Regulator for Occupational Health and Safety Professionals

Advancing the requirements to establish a Professional Regulatory Organization (PRO) in Alberta.

This initiative strengthens public protection, professional accountability, and confidence in workplace safety across Alberta.

Every day in Alberta, Occupational Health and Safety Professionals make decisions that determine whether workers return home safely.

Yet Alberta currently has no independent regulatory body responsible for setting consistent competency standards, ethical oversight, or public accountability for these professionals.

That is the work now underway through the Alberta Society of Health and Safety Professionals (ASHSP).

ASHSP is advancing the requirements to establish Alberta’s first Professional Regulatory Organization (PRO) for Occupational Health and Safety professions under Alberta’s Professional Governance Act (PGA).

This initiative is focused on strengthening public protection, professional accountability, and trust in workplace safety leadership across Alberta.

Why Professional Regulation Matters

Professional regulation exists to protect the public.

For Occupational Health and Safety Professionals, regulation would establish:

  • Clear, enforceable competency standards
  • Ethical oversight and professional accountability
  • Transparent complaints and discipline processes
  • Consistent expectations across industries and sectors
  • Public confidence in those responsible for worker safety

These are the same foundations that exist for many regulated professions across Alberta.

What Government Requires Before Regulation

Regulatory status is not granted based on intent alone.

Before regulation can be approved, the Province must see evidence that the profession has established:

  • Appropriate governance and financial controls
  • Secure systems and regulatory infrastructure
  • Clear competency and oversight frameworks
  • Demonstrated support from the profession itself

This concept is called regulatory readiness.

ASHSP is actively building the systems, standards, and infrastructure required to demonstrate that readiness.

How You Can Support the Work

Join or Renew your ASHSP Membership

Demonstrate professional support for regulation by renewing your membership. Membership is one of the indicators the Alberta Government considers when assessing regulatory readiness.

Reinstate Your ASHSP Membership

If you were previously a member, this is an important moment to re-engage. Former members returning sends a strong signal that the profession supports the direction and purpose of this work.

Support our  Infrastructure Campaign

ASHSP’s provincial crowdfunding campaign supports the financial, digital, and regulatory infrastructure required before proclamation.

A Defining Moment for the Profession

Building a regulated profession requires both infrastructure and visible professional support.

ASHSP is doing the work.

We invite YOU to stand behind it.
